Вступительную серию создатели сериала постарались сделать максимально провокационной и запоминающейся. Хэнк занимается сексом во сне и наяву, дерется, снова трахается, с монашкой, замужней девушкой и девочкой-тинейджером.
Сразу хочу оговориться, что пишу это в первую очередь для тех, кто уже видел сериал, и хочет вспомнить содержание отдельной серии. Если же вы еще не смотрели его, лучше сперва посмотрите, а не читайте это описание. В Californication не так много секса, как может показаться из моего описания или русских переводов названия, и вообще, сериал совсем не об этом. Его украшение это прекрасная игра актеров и искрометные диалоги, которые я тут по понятными причинам не привожу (пришлось бы законспектировать весь сериал).
Сериал про 40-летнего писателя Хэнка Муди (играет Дэвид Духовны), у которого творческий кризис из-за того, что от него ушла подруга Карен (Наташа МакЭлхон), с которой они много лет жили вместе, и даже нажили дочь по имени Ребекка (Мэйделин Мартин). В начале серии Хэнк идет в церковь, чтобы обсудить эту проблему с Иисусом, и встречает там монашку (Michelle Nordin). Монашка делает ему минет, от чего он просыпается в постели с милой девушкой (Michelle Nordin). Ее вскоре вернувшийся муж разбивает фару на машине Хэнка, и он во всех следующих сериях ездит на немытой машине с разбитой фарой. А это ни много, ни мало Порше кабриолет.
Хэнк без штанов приезжает на встречу с Карен и Беккой, забирает Бекку, и они едут к Хэнку смотреть кино. В спальне Хэнка 12-летняя Бэкка обнаруживает голую женщину, которой оказалась Сэнди (Camille Langfield), жена режиссера фильма "Сумасбродная штучка под названием любовь" ("Crazy Little Thing Called Love"), снятого по книге Хэнка "Бог ненавидит всех нас" ("God Hates Us All"). Хэнк намекает Сэнди, что им лучше расстаться.
Карен возвращается за дочерью, и в ходе довольно бурного разговора с Хэнком сообщает ему о том, что выходит замуж за Билла.
Хенк идет в кино на фильм "Сумасбродная штучка под названием любовь", где дерется с парнем, который громко разговаривал по мобильному во время просмотра. Затем Хэнк отправляется в книжный полистать свою книгу и там знакомится с Мией (Мэйделин Зима). Во время секса между ними происходит такой диалог:

Чарли предложил Хэнку вести блог на сайте журнала "Чертов Лос-Анджелес" (Hell-A magazine). Кроме того, Чарли и его жена Марси (Памела Адлон) знакомят Хэнка с Меридит (Amy Price-Francis). В ходе разговора Меридит просит Хэнка написать ее словесный портрет. Хэнк описывает историю ее жизни, причем так, что Меридит, не дослушав, обижается и уходит.
В том же баре Хэнк знакомится с девушкой (Alison Mei Lan). Во время секса с ней звонит телефон - Карен позвонила Хэнку, т.к. у их дочери неприятности. Вместе они едут на молодежную вечиринку, где находят Бекку, пробующую что-то курить. Хэнк берет Бекку на плечо и уносит.
Карен приглашает Хэнка в дом, они пьют вино и разговаривают. Вспоминают прошлое и Хэнк делает Карен предложение. Заходит Миа, Хэнк узнает, что она - 16-летняя дочь Билла. Хэнк возвращается домой, вспоминает Карен и Бекку, и пишет на ноутбуке большое слово Fuck.
